Alison Head of Early Years

Our Nursery staff

Alison – Head of Early Years

B.A. (Hons) English/ Cultural and Community Studies, P.G.C.E, University of Sussex

Alison is one of the school’s longest standing members of staff and has been Head of our Nursery since the school’s genesis in 1994. As a practising Buddhist and experienced practitioner of mindfulness in Early Years, Alison has led on the development of our Nursery’s unique ethos and curriculum. She says: “The school has offered me the freedom to teach in the way I truly believe in, with time to nurture every child. Over the years, we have managed to translate our philosophy of mindfulness and Buddhist ethics into a very simple practice, appropriate and enjoyable for young children. To be genuine in what we do and successfully share mindfulness, we firstly need to practice it ourselves. If we can be focused, aware and calm, children will feel more secure and valued, and will begin to mirror this way of being themselves.”

Mei Mei joined the Dharma Primary School’s staff in 2007 and now runs the Nursery alongside Alison. She also teaches yoga to both Rainbow and Mountain. “Our Nursery is such an inspiring place to work, as I am able to teach from my heart and I enjoy having the opportunity to deeply listen to children and get to know them as unique individuals. I particularly love doing yoga, relaxation and dance with the children in addition to exploring the world with all our senses, sharing a great story and going on nature walks. My Buddhist upbringing and personal daily mindfulness practice has supported my teaching; enabling me to create a compassionate, positive and exciting learning environment where the children’s needs and interests are valued and nurtured.”
