In Rainbow class (Reception/Year One) we follow an exciting topic each half term. We plan lots of trips to enhance our topics including Shoreham Lifeboat Station, Drusillas, Paradise Park and Raystede Animal Rescue centre. We also have lots of visitors to the school from the fire brigade, animal charities (with furry friends) and many more. The class perform their own Nativity play, and take part in an end of year production in the Summer term.Every other Wednesday we spend the morning in local private woods experiencing Forest School. This helps the children to develop a love and understanding of nature.Every Tuesday the class prepare and cook their own lunch and have a menu of meals for the term. This has proved to be very popular and encourages the children to try different food. On the other days Rainbow join the rest of the school for lunch. We begin the day with the children settling in and choosing their own activities. Parents are welcome to come in and communicate anything they may need to share in relation to their child. As our planning incorporates the children’s needs and interests, this is important to us.After the register, we follow the daily ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme. This is very successful in building the children’s phonic knowledge to be able to read and write. Reception and Year One work separately on different phases. They both follow ‘explore and learn’, selecting from three differentiated activities, choosing the level of challenge that they think is right for them. This supports our basis for Growth mindset and Building Learning Power. At playtime the children have the opportunity to play on the wheeled toys, draw with chalks or take part in more structured games with staff. After playtime we share a healthy snack. We encourage mindful eating by eating in silence for a few minutes, concentrating on all our senses. Our next session is usually Maths/numeracy or topic-based, following ‘explore and learn’ and play-based activities, with adult-led activities to focus their understanding and interest. After lunch we have our daily puja (circle time) and we use this time to introduce the key elements of the school’s ethos such as being kind and caring to others.
We also focus on mindfulness, using listening and breathing activities to introduce the beginnings of meditation. We talk about our feelings, listen to Buddhist stories and explore the five precepts. In the afternoons the children have the opportunity to experience Music, French and Yoga sessions with specialist teachers. They also have time for topic work, art, gardening and free choice. The children read weekly with the teachers and TAs. They also build a special relationship with their Year 5/6 reading partner, sharing weekly reading time together.
We end the day with stories and singing, giving blessings, and awarding star of the day.
